Never Not Working

so i know things have been kind of quiet but its not for a lack of working. as i've been explaining to a lot of people my work has really begun to change and i'm really enjoying this time of exploration. right now everything's on a pretty small scale but i've been having a lot of fun taking my time and rocking my first size '0' brush. so here are a some quick samples of where the work's headed and we'll see where it takes me from here. enjoy!

The Grind

whoa. its been a while. i've spent the last couple of months in major work mode and i've emerged from my dark studio with a whole new set of paintings for a slew of different shows and events happening all over. its been pretty intense and i'm looking forward to just a little downtime to spend reorganizing and cleaning the rest of my life. anyway, i'm pretty stoked on the direction the work is taking. i'm still struggling a bit with nailing down the actual process of how these piece start and then grow, but a lot of the fun has been in the exploration. here are just a couple of things i've been up to.

the first set of 4 at the top is my submission for a group show emphasizing color. they're pretty fun little pieces (10"x30" ea.) and will be on display at fabric8 in San Francisco. Spectrum opens this friday (10/14) so if you're in the SF area make sure to check it out! you can direct all inquiries to info@fabric8.com

the following 3 pieces are a selection of a few paintings that are currently on display at Parlor Gallery in asbury park.NJ. Playback will be on display until nov. 1 so check it out! you can direct all inquiries to info@parlor-gallery.com

finally, is a really fun collaboration piece with the one and only Hannah Betts. we recently opened a whole show of solo and collaborative works right here in Rochester. it was a great experience to work so closely with my wife, for a couple of reasons. 1. its quite the challenge bringing together painting and photography (without a lot of cliche collage). i'm actually really excited how we were able to 'marry' (meh-he) our very different mediums. 2. it was also a lot of fun to finally bring a lot of our common influences together into a more singular focus. i mean we share SO much in common (i mean we're married, duh) but i think if you looked at our work separately you wouldn't see those similar influences quite as well. so to finally bring those together was a lot of fun. Retrograde will be on display at fusion salon for a few more months, so if you can make it in there definitely check it out!

*phew. so i guess this is what happens when you don't post for a long time. too much to catch up on.

Time To Play

it feels really good to not have anything major lined up for the next couple of months. i've had such little time recently between shows to really spend any time hitting my black book and exploring new ideas (a sort of 'post-show' tradition that i've really come to cherish). with the few opportunities i have had though, i've really been trying to figure out how to combine my two very different ways of wanting to work -- a.) my loose, expressive painting and b.) my tighter and more precise drawing. for so long i've been happy keeping them separate but i think i'm ready to change that. before the recent sweet meat show and even during stories by streetlight, i really starting taking to more geometric forms and lines -- looking at old blue prints and bauhaus posters from the early 20th century. i sort of touched on this in the work for welcome to sweetsville, however, the above is a much deeper version of what i've been wanting to do. so yeah, i'm really looking forward to the next few months of pure creative exploration and discovery. stay tuned to see where this goes....

first off, i wanna thank everyone who came out to Welcome to Sweetsville last week and showed their support. it was truly an amazing night! i also wanna thank ALL our volunteers and sponsors without whom this event would have not been possible. and of course to my fellow SweetMeat-ers, thank you for once again being scary good and truly inspirational. i'm so grateful to be a part of such a talented and dedicated group of awesomeness!

so here are a few installation shots of the madness that was Sweetsville. the installation, which was assembled at the center of the room, rather than on the walls, posed several challenges (especially for 5, traditionally 2D artists) but in the end really came together in a fun and interesting way. i'm beyond stoked with the outcome. here are a few links to more online photo albums:

the rumors are true, the SweetMeat Co. is back at it! a year and half since our inaugural 'Extravaganza' show and several solo and collaborative projects later, we've reunited in a new space to bring the awesomeness. we're one month away from our June 24th opening night and we got the ball rolling this past weekend with a little urban exploring and material scrounging. we came across this great rochester gem that was filled with some serious goodies. stay tuned here and on the SweetMeat Co. site for more updates as we progress. we're all so excited to be working together again!

first off, i want to thank everyone who made the drive to check out the opening for Stories by Streetlight. i also want to thank my partner in crime and in life, hannah betts-moncibaiz, for making some truly inspiring work and forcing me to go out of my comfort zone a bit. i'm so proud of her and her work, and this is barely her first show -- so look out!

so here's a sampling of the work. as previously mentioned, i wanted to take some time away from painting for a bit and this set of work really let me change gears. it was such a different and refreshing way of working and i'm pretty stoked on the results. it was great to focus in a bit and tighten up. not too mention, it was an awesome excuse to sit in my studio and revisit some of my favorite cartoons when i was a kid.

so, the work for Stories by Streetlight is all starting to finally come together. as i mentioned before i decided to work on several drawings for this show and i have to say its been really fun stepping away from my paintings for a while. i've really left myself open to explore and i'm really excited about where these are all headed. hannah's photos (which are also coming together very nicely) have really become a major source of inspiration for this set and i can't express enough how fun this show is shaping up to be. so don't forget may 13th, be there!

New Studio. New Show. New Work.

so there's been some pretty significant changes in my life recently and one that's required the most adjusting has been my new studio. fresh off Nothing New and a new show opening in May, i've had little to no time to really get my new space into a great cohesive and work-flow-friendly type of environment. its been tedious to say the least but i feel i've finally started to fall into a little bit of a rhythm.

i've really started to get excited for this upcoming show, Stories by Streetlight, with the super talented (and beautiful) hannah betts-moncibaiz. i'm especially stoked for hannah as this is her first 'big' show and the photography work she has in store is super impressive (and i'm not just speaking from that husbandly biased).

the Nothing New show took quite a toll on me and to be honest have been a little 'painted-out'. so i've decided that for this show to take my 'post show' blackbook doodling sessions and take them up a notch. so i won't be exhibiting new paintings for this show but rather 8 new larger scale drawings. so far its been a lot of fun to change modes and really get into some different work. i'm exploring some different themes and have really been influenced by what hannah is doing with her photos. so stay tuned and save the date, Friday May, 13th, Different Path Gallery, Brockport NY. its shaping up to be fresh and different and very fun!

well, its finally here! the show is 95% hung and we open this friday. its really great to see all the work up and in one space and like i've been saying all along, this is NOT one you'll wanna miss. sarah and i are both pretty proud of the work and can't wait to share it with all of you. this has been an awesome experience so far and i want to give some major props to sarah for getting down and making some AMAZING work, erich of 1975 for being all around awesome and facilitating such a fun show, and of course my hannah for documenting this whole process with some amazing photos and putting up with all my crap through this entire process!

Laying it Down

well, after some struggle with building and surface prep, i finally got down and started the BIG piece for Nothing New, in march. i wasn't lying when i said i had big plans. the 40' painting doesn't all fit in my studio so i had to take it out into the hall after hours and luckily hannah was around with her camera to capture these early stages. this whole process has been a bit daunting (to say the least) but now that i have a solid base to work from i'm really excited to see where this goes. so make sure you save the date for this show, its gonna be epic!

so, its been a while since my last post but its definitely not for a lack of work. after postponing my redletter1 show for this summer I've been free to really direct my focus toward the show in march with 1975 at Booksmart Studios. as i've mentioned before, sarah rutherford and i have some really big plans for this show and hopefully these preview shots give you just a small idea of what's in store. this piece is a large, multi-panel piece (we're talking 11+ ft. w/ 19 panels) and its the small one! now this one's very much in its preliminary stages but i'm already excited for where its headed. so get ready rochester, get ready...

Finding a Groove

so it was another pretty productive weekend and it was nice to spend some real time working. i spent a lot of time building, writing, sketching and of course painting. i decided for the time being to move away from the blue pieces and experiment with a couple of larger and more colorful pieces. the ones above are just in the beginning stages but i thought i'd share the progress thus far. i'm really trying to push my medium a bit and i'm really excited about the potential of these new techniques. i'll make sure to post a pic of one finished soon.

I'm Reloaded!

so although things may have seemed quiet with the lack of posts recently, i've got quite a bit to report. first and foremost i'm happy to say hannah and i have finally taken the plunge! and have both lived to tell about it. it was an incredible day and a lot of fun. i truly am one lucky s.o.b! now that its over, however, its time to get back to work. and hard. this winter and going into spring is gonna be a doozy. starting in february i head to tampa.fl for a solo show at redletter1. i'm really stoked for this one as its my first big out of state solo show. immediately after that i'm headed back here to a show with 1975 gallery at booksmart studios with my homegirl sarah rutherford in march. we both have some REALLY BIG things in store for this show so make sure you stay tuned. sprinkle in a group show here and there, a spring show with my man MR.PRVRT and a show with hannah in may, and you've got a very busy and productive few months ahead of me. so in order to prepare i've cleaned up the studio a bit, rearranged and got a fresh new table. i've even managed to finish up a piece i started back in september!

so enjoy the new pics and don't change that dial. i'm gonna try and keep up with way more updates as new pieces get started and finished.

Nothing Beats a Fresh BlackBook

so, as my surprisingly productive and busy summer winds down I've found myself with a tiny window of down time before the big fall rush. the BIG day is finally around the corner and I'm counting down to the final 'I Do's'. I'm pretty stoked! shortly after the wedding I dive head first into a whole new body of work for 2 major shows -- one in December and the other in March. so with the little bit of free time I've decided to spend some of it in a brand new blackbook, honing my chops. its been so long since I've just chilled and hit the book that's its been really nice to let loose and play a bit. I've decided to share a few experts and as you'll see my drawings are pretty different from my most recent paintings. i've always considered myself a bit of a creative schizo. I've enjoyed tightening things up a bit and its always a nice change of pace from my more expressive paintings. it'll keep me nice and busy and by the time it comes around to start painting again I'll be ready to let loose and get messy. so enjoy the small glimpses into my book (something I don't really let too many people see) because I've enjoyed makin' 'em!

first off, I just wanted to say thanks for everyone who stopped by the Tap & Mallet last night for the 'SuperSplatterBrothers' show. It was a great turnout and a special thanks goes out to Joe for being a great host and my man PRV for cranking out some more stellar work. its always exciting to show with him.

so, as if the Tap show didn't keep me busy enough, i'll be showing even more new work at Fusion Salon in a couple of weeks for the Park Ave. Fest. if you happen to be out and about and make it to the festival definitely make sure to stop by 333 park ave. and check out the work!

so i thought it was about time to post some new work. the free time has been nice and i've been having fun pushing the work in all sorts of different directions. the few new pieces above are part of a show at Canteen Art Shop + Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario on July 2nd. its smaller scale show so all the paintings are being done on illustration board which i gotta say has been really nice to work on recently. i miss the paper. make sure you check back here and the Canteen website for details as they develop. enjoy!

A Good Cause and Some Good News

so at the end of the month Mr.Prvrt and I will be donating some work to a benefit show at Kismet Gallery in Troy . NY. all proceeds will go to Troy's Josephs House to raise much needed funds and awareness for the homeless population of Troy. its a 2 night event (4/30 & 5/1) so if you're in the area make sure you stop down and check out the work along with some live music. thanks goes out to Prv for setting things up for such a good cause.

also, I'll have some work on display at Art Whino Gallery in D.C. anyone in the capital area make sure you check out the space (173 waterfront st., national harbor . MD). more details coming soon...

also, also don't forget fabric8's SuperNatural (3318 22nd st. San Fran) is on display now and will be up till May 10th. if you're in the area you don't wanna miss this!

i've finally got some pieces posted from the 'Saint+Prvrts' show. as you'll see i tried some new things with this set of paintings. after a few attempts with the white backgrounds, i realized i wanted the colors to really make a statement. so, i switched it up! they're pretty fun paintings and with a thick resin top coat over them they really shine. make sure you check them out on the '2010' page up top. or, you can still check them out live at 1975 Gallery at Surface Salon until april 30th (658 south ave). enjoy!

Encore Presentation

First off let me start by thanking everyone who came out and supported SweetMeat Co's first event this saturday. the turnout was unbelievable and the response even better. there are TONS of people to thank who volunteered their time and energy and my deepest gratitude goes out to all of them. i also want to thank all the fellow SweetMeat-ers for getting down and making this event and collective one of the raddest things i've ever been involved in!

Secondly, due to the amazing response we've decided to extend the show to a "Last Chance" viewing this Friday! Now, this will REALLY be it ... dismantling begins on saturday. So, if you didn't get a chance to check it out or just HAVE to see it again stop back down to 1115 e. main st in the hungerford building for some art sweetness! the time right now is tentative but we're looking at a 6-pm to 9pm window. thats right, the SweetMeat Co. is finally under way and some pretty exciting things are really starting to develop. for those of you who don't know what the SweetMeat Co. is let me explain (kinda)...

in the most basic sense we are an art collective based out of Rochester.NY. we've come together for the month of january in a 2,500 sq ft. space (in the historic Hungerford Building) for some pretty dope installation and creative awesomeness...stay tuned to the SweetMeat Co. blog for updates on the show and save the date for the one time viewing on January 30th.

The Fusion Show last night was a huge success and I want to thank everybody who came out and supported the work. The positive responses were great and to everyone who 'had to have a piece', thank you for letting me share my work with you. A big shout out to the entire Fusion team (Jes, Nico, Andrea and Jamie) for being awesome hosts. And thanks to Portifino's Restaurant for some delicious food and Tyler for handing out the beverages and keeping everybody nice and loose.
